Smith romps clear in Regiment five miler

Kavin Smith warmed up for next week's May 24 Marathon Derby by comfortably winning the Bermuda Regiment/Pepsi Breakfast Five Mile Road Race on Sunday.

The eight-time and current defending Derby champion broke the tape in 27 minutes and 11 seconds to finish a minute and a half ahead of second placed Brett Forgesson.

Forgesson barely pipped Andrew Wadman across the line to take second place honours in a time of 28 minutes and 44 seconds - the same time given to Wadman.

Smith averaged just over five and half minutes per mile to remain a firm favourite to retain his Bermuda Day title next Monday.

"I just decided at the last minute to go out and run the race because Jamal (Hart) organises that race for the Regiment. He's a good friend of mine. I felt comfortable running - even during the final two miles after I decided to push it a bit to the finish line. It was comfortable and I was also trying out a new pair of running shoes," said Smith.

Also gearing up for next week's premier domestic road race was last year's Derby runner-up to Lynn Patchett, Anna Eatherley.

Eatherley captured the women's title on Sunday after crossing the finish line in seventh place overall in a time of 31 minutes and 17 seconds.

Victoria Fiddick finished in second in 33 minutes and 16 seconds while Georgia Wharton completed the five miles in third place in a time of 35 minutes and 18 seconds.

Almost 300 children signed up for the Flyers track meet at the weekend, an achievement that meet director Donna Watson believes bodes well for Bermuda's athletics future.

The event, sponsored by XL Capital, was held at the National Sports Centre and saw racing for children of all ages.

"Track and field is alive and running," Watson said. "In this age group we have some real up and coming athletes. If we can keep them in the programme, when they reach CARIFTA age I think we should have a fantastic team. There were some excellent results in some excellent races."

Watson said she wanted to thank the sponsors, the older CARIFTA athletes who helped with the meet and everyone associated with the event.
