Motocross club reach decision on angry parents
Bermuda Motocross Club have decided the fate of Vaughan and Amanda Smith - the parents who verbally accosted St. John Ambulance Brigade personnel at a meet last Sunday.
However, club president Ashley Simmons has declined to publicly divulge the conclusion reached by the BMC's disciplinary committee and conveyed to the club's executive at a meeting on Wednesday night.
That, he said, would be left up to the Smiths if they wished to do so. However, he confirmed that he would soon be informing the Smiths of what sanctions, if any, they would face.
"The disciplinary committee has finished its deliberations and made some recommendations to us, the executive committee, which we have accepted. We're trying to contact the Smiths to arrange to see them and let them know what the decision is.
"We want to do this face-to-face. Out of respect for the Smiths we don't want to just call them up on the phone and tell them. If they don't want to see us we will send them a registered letter," said the president, adding that the decision not to publicise the outcome was partly out of concern for the Smiths' young children who participate in motocross events.
In fact, it was an injury to the Smiths' son, Jonte, in a race at Coney Island that triggered the ugly incident. St. John Ambulance volunteers were attending to another injured rider when Jonte suffered a spill. His parents complained that he did not receive prompt attention and subsequently made unkind comments to the first aid unit.
The aggrieved St. John Ambulance team left the meet, forcing it to be cancelled with only two of 15 races completed.
However, earlier this week, the volunteer group confirmed they would continue working at sporting events including this weekend's 2002 Bermuda Motocross Open.
All is set for that spectacle, taking place at Wellington Oval tomorrow and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. both days. More than 30 foreign riders arrived in Bermuda yesterday and another ten fly in today.
Organiser Mike Jones is praying for good weather and bumper crowds throughout the two-day show which will feature some of the world's best motocross riders and stunt specialists.
"Everything is fine. The track should be finished tomorrow (today) afternoon and the riders will be down there practising on the jumps later in the evening," he said.
Fans have the opportunity to meet some of the top personalities participating between 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. today during an autograph session at Added Speed motorcycle accessories shop (behind the Green Lantern).
