Calvert Ashley Smith, of Club Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to two charges of theft. Crown counsel Larry Mussenden said Smith entered Harrington Hundreds grocery store around 12.30 p.m. on August 12.

He picked up a shopping basket and gathered grocery items, including a carton of Camel cigarettes and a bottle of white wine.

He went to the rear of the store and stuffed the cigarettes and wine into a knapsack and walked out. The theft was witnessed by employees and caught on surveillance cameras.

When Smith was confronted by employees outside the store, he threatened them with a knife and ran off toward Spittal Pond.

One week later on August 19, Smith walked into Vera P. Card Ltd. at about 8.15 p.m.

A tourist saw Smith pocket a gold Omega necklace, valued at about $850, and leave the store.

When Senior Magistrate Will Francis asked Smith why he stole the necklace, he replied: "When I was looking into the window, it was the glitter, the glitter...the glitter made me anxious for it.'' Mr. Francis questioned Smith's mental state and adjourned the matter until October 5 for a social inquiry report. Bail was set at $1,000 with a like surety.
