The container ship Oleander sailed early for New Jersey last week in light of the weather, but had to sit in port from Thursday to Saturday before she could be loaded.

With the wind blowing 70 knots at Newark, "the port was essentially closed'', said Mr. Barry Brewer, marketing manager for Container Ship Management Ltd., which handles the Oleander .

After she sailed from New Jersey Saturday night, the Oleander reached Hamilton in 52 hours, despite 30-foot seas from the stern. "We feel pretty pleased with the way the ship has been handling the winter weather,'' Mr. Brewer said.

The Oleander unloaded 138 containers, 29 of them refrigerated. Four trailers in the garage deck mainly carried equipment for the new Bermuda Electric Light Co. Ltd. generating plant.

The ship also carried some loose steel and pipe and a Star class sailing boat on a trailer.

The Oleander sailed yesterday for New Jersey, with another major storm expected off the east coast of the United States.

A Coast Guard Hercules C-130 transport plane was expected to deliver a gasoline-powered pump yesterday to a 35-foot yacht floundering about 450 miles southeast of the Island.

The 57-year-old captain of the Owl , who is accompanied by his wife, had already received two pumps since he began to take on water on Sunday. But he could not get them to work, said a spokesman for Harbour Radio.

"We have been trying to persuade them off the boat, but that is their prerogative (to stay aboard), because it is their lives,'' he said.

The Panamanian-registered freighter Secil Lulo was expected to sail yesterday for Quebec after discharging 1,247 tons of equipment at Penno's Wharf for the Tynes Bay incinerator project.

The 251-foot ship, handled by Meyer Agencies, arrived Sunday.

The container ship Somers Isles , also handled by Meyer, arrived at Hamilton on Sunday and discharged 80 containers, 11 of them refrigerated. She also carried 12 bundles of steel and three bundles of pipe.

The Somers Isles sailed on Monday morning for Florida.

The container ship Bermuda Islander arrived one day late yesterday and unloaded 75 containers, four of them refrigerated. She sailed yesterday afternoon for New Jersey.

The Bold Venture arrived on Tuesday afternoon at St. George's with military supplies for the US Naval Air Station. She also dropped off two refrigerated containers at Hamilton yesterday before she sailed for Norfolk, Virginia.

She was handled by John S. Darrell Co. Ltd.

HIGH SEAS -- The container ship Oleander rides wild seas en route to Bermuda two weeks ago. The following seas were running at 30 feet and more, sometimes rising to half the height of Oleander 's wheelhouse, seen on the right side of the photograph. The picture was taken by ship captain Joop Vrylk. The North Atlantic has been in gale or near gale conditions for the past two weeks.
