Bailey's Bay Quarry workers to meet with managers today

A meeting will take place today between management, union officials and staff at the government quarry in Bailey's Bay after workers downed tools last week.

Stephen Outerbridge, acting permanent secretary at the Ministry of Works and Engineering, told The Royal Gazette that about 40 garage maintenance staff stopped work on Wednesday as they were disgruntled with the depot foreman. He said staff returned to work after management agreed to a meeting the next day.

"The staff feel the depot foreman is not qualified to hold that position and feel the recruitment process was unfair," said Mr. Outerbridge. "They also take issue with his style of management and refuse to work with him. The depot foreman has been assigned other duties until the issue is resolved."

It was not possible to reach anyone at Bermuda Industrial Union yesterday. A source told this newspaper on Friday that workers were unhappy at being told they needed certification in electrical and mechanical trades, claiming the depot foreman was promoted before getting certified.
