The 90 foot ketch Belle Aventure has withdrawn from this year’s Marion Bermuda Race, leaving local sloop Spirit of Bermuda as the sole entry in the new Classic Yacht Division.“Due to unforeseen circumstances with the owners’ schedules, S/Y Belle Aventure will not be able to sail to Bermuda this year during the Marion to Bermuda Race,” read a statement from Belle Aventure captain Dave Thompson. “We were looking forward to racing but will have to delay for another year. Both the crew and owners apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and wish all the participants luck in the race this year.”Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC) Commodore Allan Williams added: “I don’t know the reasons (for the late withdrawal) but notwithstanding I’m very disappointed.”Belle Aventure’s withdrawal has reduced this year’s overall Marion Bermuda race fleet from 39 to 38 boats.Flying the Island’s banner along with Spirit of Bermuda in the biennial 645 mile ocean race is the 40-foot Hinckley, Alice Kay, that is competing in the Founders Division.Since its inception the Marion Bermuda Race, jointly hosted by RHADC, Beverly Yacht Club and Blue Water Sailing Club has evolved into a premier ocean race and sailing event which appeals to a broad range of cruising and racing enthusiasts.This year’s race is scheduled to get underway on June 14 in Buzzards Bay, Marion, Massachusetts and finish off St David’s Head, Bermuda.* Coronation Cup holders Contest III was the biggest winner during weekend fitted dinghy racing in Granaway Deep.The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) dinghy won two of the day’s three races to walk away with both the BAA Cup and WH Bennett Memorial Trophy.Contest III, however, was denied a second successive clean sweep of the season after sinking in the day’s final race for the Spithead Trophy which was won by Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club’s (RHADC) Elizabeth II.St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club’s Victory IV finished second in all three races to underline a consistent display of sailing.Sandys Boat Club’s Challenger II had a tough day on the water after failing to start the first race, bringing up the rear in the second and finishing third in the third and final race.Contest III currently holds a seven and a quarter points lead over nearest rival Victory IV in the 2013 Coronation Cup series.* Siblings Mikey and Ceci Wollmann stamped their authority on the inaugural Bermuda O’pen BIC National Championship hosted by Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC).Mikey claimed overall honours in the 16 race series while sister Ceci was the top female in the senior girls age bracket.The two siblings will represent the RHADC at this year’s O’pen BIC World Championship along with Brandon Adams, Blair Blakeney, Peter and Sammy Dill, Aglae Perrin and Charis Todd.Claiming the junior boys and girls titles during last weekend’s second phase of the 2013 Bermuda O’pen BIC National Championship were Joe and Grace Arrowsmith respectively.
