Breaking News: Mom guilty of stealing from after-school scheme
A mother who ran an after-school programme for Gilbert Institute was found guilty this afternoon of stealing more than $40,000 from the programme.
Lee Brown, 49, of St. David’s, was found unanimously guilty by the seven woman five man jury in Supreme Court in less than two hours on all eight charges she faced.
Brown stole $30,893 from takings meant for the programme’s Bank of Bermuda account, between November 2003 and April 2005.
She was also found guilty of stealing more than $10,000 by forging signatures on cheques and of charges relating to cheques totalling $6,090 upon which Brown forged signatures from co-signees to present them to pay her bills.
Brown showed no emotion as the jury foreman read out each guilty verdict and she was remanded in custody until the August arraignments.
Her defence lawyer Larry Scott, following the decision said: “We are very disappointed. My client maintains she didn’t do it.”
