Top footballer dies after mystery illness

The death has occurred of St George’s footballer Chae Simmons at Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts where he had been hospitalised for the last four weeks ago.Mr Simmons’ uncle, Kenneth Bascome, confirmed that Mr Simmons, 34, died yesterday after being in intensive care with a mystery illness.Simmons was initially hospitalised at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in critical condition before being flown to Lahey Clinic.“We wish to say thank you to the community for all their support and prayers,” said Mr Bascome last night. “We wish to thank people for the functions that were held, in particular the LCCA who were instrumental in us being able to fly Chae to the States for medical treatment. They still haven’t determined what was wrong with him.“At this stage it hasn’t hit me. He and I were very close, I took him to Disney World when he was three, his first trip.“Chae was with me at Tobacco Bay from the age of two until he started elementary school. We were together all the time.”The death is the second tragedy for the family who lost another family member, Kevan Foggo, in 2006 in a road accident. He was also Mr Bascome’s nephew.Mr Simmons was an outstanding midfielder who played for several clubs during his career after beginning with St George’s as a junior player.He also played for St David’s, Wolves and then spent eight seasons at Boulevard and was captain for a time before returning to St George’s in 2010. He played only a handful of games last season.
