Sterritt first in close finish

former St.David's baselands, including top runner Kavin Smith in his first outing -- but it was Steve Sterritt who placed first in the main event.

A fast pace was set by Jason Krupp who was followed closely by Sterritt with most of the early work done by category three riders Mel Bennett and Aaron Schindler. Some of the category two riders found the going too tough with Mike Lee of Team Pure Water being dropped from the lead pack along with sprint champion Whayman Butterfield.

The midway prime was won by junior one rider Kris Hedges who held off Sterritt in the sprint after attacking on the climb. This move opened a small gap of 15 seconds on the main field which was closed within the next lap.

Schindler won the category three race over Bennett who led out of the climb before allowing Schindler to sprint to the finish. Trevor Hedges hung on to take third.

In the main event the lead pack shrunk to four riders. Veteran Jeff Payne and Sterritt did most of the work at the front as Kris Hedges and Tim Palmer were allowed to sit in. Palmer had the race in his hands with most of the work having been done by his Winners Edge team-mates.

However, on the last lap when making the technical left-hand turn his foot came out of the cleat and quickly Sterritt jumped on the opportunity to open a gap. As Palmer attacked hard on the hill Sterritt showed why he's Bermuda's top cyclist as he held on and outsprinted Palmer to win by half a wheel. Payne finished a deserved third while Kris Hedges took fourth overall and first in the Junior II group.

In other action, Laurie Orchard took women's honours as well as two primes over Kim Mason. The veterans race was won by Vic Ball over arch rival Mervyn Van Putten while Paul Madeiros finished third. In the Junior II category, the ever-improving Andy Simons won while hanging in with the novice group from whom Wayne Scott emerged triumphant over Peter Matcham with Kavin Smith third.
