Double the distance no sweat for Butterfield
his allround talents on the weekend with another comfortable triathlon victory in a field of more than 70.
The 15-year-old Saltus schoolboy, who has dominated the triathlon scene this year, did it again on Sunday morning -- this time in the first local Enduro-format event which required competitors to swim 375 metres, cycle 10 kilometres and run 2.5 kilometres, and then complete the entire course again! Butterfield handled the back-to-back race in his stride, racing home in one hour, two minutes and 58 seconds, more than a minute ahead of his fast-improving schoolmate, Jonathan Herring.
Fifteen year-old Herring, winner of the recent national championships in Butterfield's absence, had the better of his rival in the water, but once on land Butterfield took over, putting together a powerful run and cycle.
Finishing third, more than six minutes down on the two teenagers, was Jason Krupp (1:10.43) while top master Andrew Doble placed fourth in 1:11.39 followed by Oliver Martin in 1:12.22.
Laurie Orchard, another much-improved triathlete, added the Enduro title to her recent national championship win as she led the ladies home in 1:15.23, tenth overall. Julia Hawley, however, was hot on her heels, finishing 11th in the field in 1:16.10 with Clare Morrall placing third in 1:19.09.
Peter Grayston, at 61 the oldest athlete on the course, wrapped up the over 50 title, finishing an impressive 16th overall in 1:20.01 as he continued his build-up to next year's age group World Championships.
Earlier in the day, some 125 youngsters took part in the national junior triathlon championships with Nick Taylor taking first place among the advanced group, finishing more than a minute ahead of Chris Conway with Mark Morrison third.
But there was disappointment for fourth-placed Brian Steinhoff who had held a healthy lead going into the run but took a wrong turn at the end of the cycle, missing the transition area and losing considerable ground.
The race involved a 300 metre swim, 15K bike and 3K run.
