Wicket delight was 'over the top'

Coach Gus Logie yesterday hailed the astonishing World Cup debut of Bermuda’s teenage sensation Malachi Jones who snatched a wicket on his very first ball against India on Monday . . . but he questioned whether the drawn out celebrations that followed might have been slightly “over the top”, writes Adrian Robson.

After watching as Dwayne Leverock took a superb catch in the slips to dismiss opener Robin Uthappa, Jones set off on a celebratory run around the field, was engulfed byteam-mates and had to wipe tears from his eyes before play could resume.

“ I think it shows the reaction at different levels of maturity,” said Logie, “in terms of our players and let’s say those young Bangladeshi players, the 17-year-old or the 18-year-old who did so well (against India).

“I don’t know if that amount of celebration would have taken place in their team.

“I was very excited, of course, but one of the things we took note of was the amount of emotion that was shown, which just shows how much it must have meant to him to have achieved such a feat. Unfortunately we couldn’t continue in that vein . . .” But Logie conceded it was a moment that will long be remembered. “You can’t take it away from Malachi, first ball, it was a very special feat, a great catch . . . you know, let’s hope it continues.”
