Ashley Yearwood

Just when you thought Bermuda’s swimmers couldn’t get any better, they did!Ashley Yearwood and Rebecca Sharpe won gold medals in the women’s 50 metres freestyle and women’s 200 metres backstroke while Bermuda won the silver medal in the women’s 400 metres freestyle relay to cap another fruitful day for the hosts at the National Aquatics Centre.Yearwood won a first Island Games individual gold medal in a new Games’ record of 26:50.“It feels great to get my first gold medal (individual) at the Island Games in my own country,” she said. “Before the race I kept telling myself ‘you can do it’, and I did.”Yearwood held off a late charge from Shetland Island’s Andrea Strachan (26:56) before claiming the gold by sixth hundredths of a second.“While I was swimming I looked over at the other girl next to me (Strachan) and I was ahead of her and I just had to keep this lead,” she added.En route to the final Yearwood posted the fastest qualifying time of 26.64.In contrast, Sharpe claimed the gold in the 200 metre backstroke more convincingly. Her winning time of 2:16.49 equalled her personal best over the distance and left her well clear of nearest rival Lara Butler (2:18.31) of the Cayman Islands.“On the last 50 metres I could see that I was leading and I kind of just powered home very confident that I had got the gold,” Sharpe said.Like Yearwood, Sharpe was under intense pressure to deliver after posting the fastest qualifying time (2:20.31) during the preliminaries.“It’s definitely a lot of pressure on you having the fastest qualifying time,” she said. “But the 200 hundred backstroke is my favourite race and I think winning the gold medal is the pinnacle of my career so far.”Bermuda’s swimmers then ended the session on a high after claiming the silver in the 400 metre freestyle relay in new national record time of 3:53.46. Representing the hosts in the relay event was Madelyn Moore, Lisa Blackburn, Rebecca Heyliger and Yearwood. For added measure Blackburn set a new national record (1:11.69) in the women’s 100 metre breaststroke final while Moore set a new personal best (2:29.85) during the women’s 200 backstroke preliminaries.Present at the National Aquatics Centre to witness the Island’s swimmers continue their assault on the medals was Sports Minister Wayne Scott who described the home team’s performance as “phenomenal”.“The performances speak for themselves; personal bests, Bermuda records, Island Games records . . . I mean this is phenomenal,” he said. “These young ladies are just swimming so well you’ve got to give BASA (Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association) credit for what they are doing with our swimming programmes here and we just need to continue going from strength to strength.”Bermuda’s swimmers have now won 13 medals, including four gold, with one day of competition remaining. For the third straight day several new Games’ records were set in the pool.Cayman Island’s Brett Fraser set new marks in the men’s 50 metres butterfly (23.26) and 100 metres freestyle (47.65) on the way to winning the gold medal in both events.Grant Halsall (Isle of Man) lowered the bar in the men’s 100 metres individual medley (53.39) while Jersey set a new record (3:50.46) in the women’s 400 metres freestyle relay en route to the gold medal.
