Union postpones emergency meeting

BIU president Chris Furbert

Garbage collection in Hamilton will be on schedule this morning, after an emergency meeting called for unionised Corporation of Hamilton staff at Bermuda Industrial Union Headquarters at 8am was called off.BIU President Chris Furbert told The Royal Gazette last night the meeting has been postponed following a call he received from Corporation of Hamilton Secretary, Ed Benevides.Instead, BIU officials and management of the Corporation of Hamilton. are scheduled to be held at union headquarters at 9.30am today to discuss two key issues. On Saturday, The Royal Gazette reported that a trash truck driver involved in an accident, who refused to take a drug test when asked to submit a urine sample, had been dismissed.Another employee suffered a major stroke last April and has been unable to work since. That worker told Corporation management he was 85 percent back to full strength at the end of last year, and would be able to return to work in the new year. He was told by management to report back in January, but when he did he was told his job no longer existed. When contacted last night, Mr Furbert said: “The emergency meeting for staff has been postponed and the head of the division will be letting our members know when the next meeting will be held after we talk to management.“BIU Organiser Lewis Somner will also be at the Corporation of Hamilton first thing Monday morning to make sure all our members know the emergency meeting has been called off.”
