A Southampton woman is calling on the public to be more considerate about when they put out trash for collection after witnessing garbage piling up on a neighbours yard.

Linda Butterfield said that some members of the public have been dumping their garbage on the yard at the entrance of Bowe Lane where a pair of seniors live several days before scheduled trash pick up, leading to an unsightly and unhygienic mess.

She said the issue came to a head earlier this month when garbage had been left on the property on the first day of the Cup Match holiday — four hot days before the next scheduled pick up.

Ms Butterfield said: “Do we have to be subjected to this every holiday? Have some people misplaced their moral values of life, or are they just too busy to care about their neighbours?

“This area is private property. The tenants and owner of this house don’t want any trash here except on days when it is collected.

“Signs have been posted a number of times, as requested by the owner’s son who lives in the area, but again and again they have been taken down. Some of us on Frolic Lane are very disgusted with this serious trash problem we have going on here. It’s frustrating to see, especially for the people who live in the house.”

Along with being an eyesore, she said the trash being left on the property attracts rats, cats and chickens, which in turn causes an even larger mess.

“It looks disgusting,” she said. “We have some guest houses nearby. Guests, walkers and visitors should not have to put up with this.”

Ms Butterfield added that the problem is not limited to her neighbourhood, urging all members of the public to be considerate about when and where they put out their garbage, saying that all residents of the Island are responsible for keeping Bermuda beautiful.

“We all need to do our part and represent our country,” she said.
