THE Bermuda branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD) yesterday announced former fire chief Reginald Rawlins would assume the post of chairman, previously held by Geoffrey Moore.

A membership association for business leaders, the IoD has, among its aims, to provide an effective voice to represent the interests of members and to encourage good conduct of public affairs.

As chairman, Mr. Rawlins will be responsible for overseeing the Bermuda branch committee and ensuring the smooth running of the operation.

"I am really looking forward to serving as chairman of such a valuable organisation," said Mr. Rawlins, who previously held the post of deputy chairman for the group. "I will ensure the IoD continues to provide an effective voice for business leaders and to encourage good corporate governance.

"The IoD urges directors to fulfil their leadership responsibilities and to attain high levels of expertise and effectiveness within the companies that they run."

Mr. Rawlins has a Bachelor of Science in Fire Service Management from Pacific Western University and spent 38 years in the Fire Service, rising to the rank of Chief Fire Officer in 1987 - a position he held for 15 years.

In 1992 he was awarded the Queen's Fire Service Medal and in 1994 elected a Freeman of the City of London. On April 1, he will take over as proprietor of the Bulley-Graham Funeral Home.

His interests are varied; he serves as vice-president and chair of the Cathedral Boys Choir, is past president of the Hamilton Rotary Club and the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association and has served as a member of the Synod of the Anglican Church of Bermuda and Bermuda Cathedral Vestry. In his spare time, he enjoys squash, music and photography.

Founded in 1903, the IoD was granted a Royal Charter in 1908. The association of more than 54,000 members forms a worldwide network, reaching into every corner of the business community, from large companies to small, private firms. The Bermuda branch was incorporated in 1991.
