But now it?s the sailors? turn to argue . . .
Stevie Dickinson and crew Ty Trott led the East End Mini Yacht Club to a clean sweep of top honours during last weekend?s West End Sailboat Club Regatta in the Great Sound.
Dickinson and Trott celebrated their reunion in empathic fashion, taking line honours in three of the day?s four races while stablemates Scott Fox and James Perry finished second and third respectively, the former clinching the runners up spot via a tie-break after both skippers completed the regatta with seven points apiece.
The occasion marked Dickinson?s first triumph since winning the Flag Pole to Flag Pole regatta in early May and first with Trott since International Race Week in April.
However, the regatta did not go off without a hitch as an incident in the opening race involving top skipper Rudy Bailey somewhat soured the proceedings.
The West End Sailboat Club skipper was leading the opening race when he steered his boat toward the wrong weather (Leeward) mark. Disgusted at being disqualified, Bailey then fled the race course in a rage of fury, actions which drew heavy criticism from arch-rival Dickinson who sailed on to comfortably retain his title.
?It was disgusting! I have never seen such bad sportsmanship in my life,? commented Dickinson, describing his rival?s antics.
?If you are representing your club and you are supposed to be the best in your club, then to show that sort of sportsmanship is ridiculous. He?s (Bailey) like a spoilt brat. He couldn?t get his own way and so he decided to leave.
?Here we are trying to encourage each other to sail better so that the overall level of sailing remains high. But to me Bailey is like a spoilt brat. If he can?t get his own way then he takes his boat and goes home because he can?t get his way. It was his club?s regatta and just bad sportsmanship.
?He?s gone from Rudy Bailey to Rudy Bailey and it?s sad.?
Bailey, on the other hand, also had a few words to say to his long-time rival.
?He (Dickinson) should be glad that I didn?t race because they (race committee) screwed up the buoy on the race course,? he said.
?My daughter (Danielle) and I have raced against Stevie on numerous occasions and he has never beaten us as a sailing team. He (Dickinson) beat those other skippers on Sunday ? not me.
?But we will get to sail against each other again sometime very soon.?
Bailey recalled the incident.
He explained: ?It was a mix up with one of the buoys on the race course. Between my daughter (Danielle) and I we decided to drop out of the regatta. That was pretty much it.?
Comet sailing, meanwhile, resumes July 11 in St.George?s Harbour, the venue for this year?s Territorial Regatta.
Dickinson attributes last Sunday?s clean sweep of honours by the East End Mini Yacht Club to team work.
?It?s all coming together. These St.George?s sailors want to sail and they are learning how to sail and we are sharing information,? he explained.
?And in doing this we are all getting faster ? and we proved that on Sunday. We were the first three boats. Only three boats entered from St.George?s and we came first, second and third.?
The reigning International Race Week champion is also pleased to have Trott, who has seen limited action this summer, back onboard .
?Ty (Trott) is an excellent sailor. . . she just picked up where she left off,? said Dickinson.
?I told her we were going to sail very aggressively and sail hard to win this competition. And she was able to rise to the occasion because we were really fast in the shifty conditions.?
