Keeper Adams turns pro in US
American professional soccer club Charlotte Eagles.
Adams, the former North Village 'keeper who moved to the States to study, will join the USL Division Three club for the 1999 season.
After his graduation in May from High Point University, North Carolina, with a degree in Sports Management and a minor in Business Management, Adams will relocate to the Charlotte area with his wife and three-year-old daughter.
Last year, he captained his college team in their first season in Division One of the Big South Conference.
His side had a 10-10 record in their 20 games and Adams had five clean sheets and 107 saves to his name, conceding just 18 goals.
Adams has long been considered one of the two top goalkeepers in Bermuda, along with Vasco's Timmy Figureido, and his career with the Bermuda national team stretches back 10 years.
He is a veteran of the 1992 World Cup qualifying campaign and returned to the Island in January to play in Bermuda's 1-0 win against Antigua and their 2-1 defeat against the Denmark under-23 touring team.
Eagles coach Mark Steffens was delighted to have Adams on his books and made it clear that he expected big things from his new signing.
"We are looking for him to give us leadership from the back and dominate the box,'' said Steffens. "He would be a 'keeper/sweeper, much like the system played by the Dutch national team.'' Steffen added: "While Dwayne may be five feet nine inches tall, he plays like he is six feet three. He dominates the game. He has played at a high international level and brings experience to a young Eagles team.'' Adams, who came to the Eagles' attention through the soccer coach at High Point, will replace Neal Andrews, who left to play overseas after three years with the club.
Bermuda's director of coaching Clyde Best was delighted to hear that Adams was going professional.
"Dwayne's a very good goalkeeper and this is a great opportunity for him,'' said Best.
"If he had had the opportunity, I think he would have been good enough to play in England.
"I wish we could have more players playing professionally and I'm always talking to coaches in the US and England about players.'' Dwayne Adams: signed by the Charlotte Eagles.
