Patton impresses with seventh-place in Ontario

Campbell Patton

Campbell Patton made positive strides at this year’s CORK International Optimist Regatta in Kingston, Ontario. The promising Sandys Boat Club and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club sailor placed seventh in an overall fleet of 99 boats to improve upon last year’s ninth place showing at the same event. The son of veteran Etchells sailor Tim Patton underlined his potential after posting five top five finishes that included three bullets.Had it not been for a black flag in the sixth race of the eight race series, Patton would have finished even higher on the leader board.Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC) sailor Adam Larson, the only other local sailor in the fleet, also impressed at the regatta. Larson placed 19th overall with a best finish of 12th in the sixth race.American Ryan Hennessey (28 pts) won the regatta by a comfortable margin over nearest rival and compatriot Luke Arnone (47 pts). The 2013 CORK International Optimist Regatta was held at the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the head of St Lawrence River where the combination of land mass, islands and thermal effects produce ideal wind and waves with minimum current.*For the first time in recent memory Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s Contest III failed to score a bullet in a fitted dinghy race series.Sunday’s racing in St George’s Harbour saw Challenger II (Sandys Boat Club), Elizabeth II (Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club) and Victory IV (St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club) claim victories sailing in 5-8 westerly breezes with their number two rigs.Challenger II won the opening race to take the Trott Cup while Victory IV won the second race to walk off with the St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club Cup.Elizabeth II won the third and final race to clinch the Victory Cup respectively.Contest III, which has already sewn up the season championship to retain the Coronation Cup, managed two seconds and a third on the day.The final race of the 2013 fitted dinghy season will take place at Granaway Deep on August 25.
