Gavin Manders? victory at Pomander Gate (Island Construction Open) has catapulted him to the number-two position in the Men?s A singles of the latest tennis rankings.

The young player fought past Andy Bray in a fierce match that lasted more than three hours to reach the final. There, he upset defending champion and top seed Jenson Bascome in two close though inconsistent sets.

Bray has the consolation of moving up to number one in Bermuda alone for the first time.

Meanwhile, James Collieson ? the winner of last month?s Heineken event over Bray ? would have returned to the top spot with even a semi-final placing at the Island Construction tournament but opted to play only doubles.

An intriguing battle looms in the upcoming Argus tournament with Bray, Manders, Bascome or Collieson capable of grabbing the top spot if they win.

Pomander semi-finalist David Jenkins is ranked number five, then there?s a cluster of players (Jovan Whitter, Roger Marshall, David Thomas and John Johnston) vying for sixth.

In the Ladies? singles, youth again was to the fore as Ashley Brooks showed great improvement in all aspects of her game with a resounding win over former number one Zarah DeSilva to prove she is worthy of commanding top billing.

Another prominent teenager Morgan Lightbourne followed up her Heineken Open win with a semi-final berth at the Pomander event to edge up to third in the rankings.

In Men?s doubles, top-ranked Bray teamed up with Collieson for a three-set win over Bascome and Manders. It was a perfect two for two for the winning duo following their Heineken success. Collieson moves to number two with Bascome retaining three and Manders rising to sixth. Perennial semi-finalists Roger Marshall and David Jenkins are seventh.

In Ladies? doubles, veteran Gill Butterfield and Jill Finnigan shocked many as the unseeded pair advanced to the Pomander final without losing a set. However, they were no match for the solid placement of number one Laverne Stowe and the pace and power of her partner Brooks.

Stowe maintains her 100 percent success rate in this category with Brooks at two. Butterfield returns to the top three followed closely by Cooper, Finnigan and Holland respectively.

Laverne Stowe and Jenson Bascome remain atop the mixed doubles rankings after withstanding the youthful challenge of the Brooks-Manders pairing in their Pomander showdown.
