Soccer teams pay tribute to former star

Family, friends and sports fans will converge on Bernard Park on Saturday, April 17 for the second annual Derek Bell Memorial football match honouring the late Hotels, North Village and Bermuda national team defender.

The Bermuda Football Association sanctioned event will kick off at 12 noon with a contest featuring Bermuda?s Under-17 female national team against a local ladies? select while at 2 p.m. Devonshire All-Stars and St.George?s All-Stars will do battle.

The day?s featured match ? for the Derek Bell Memorial Shield ? will see inaugural champions Village take on last year?s beaten challengers, PHC Raiders, at 4 p.m.

Commemorative trophies will be awarded to all teams and presentations will be held for the Most Valuable Player award following each match.

Players of each participating team will make a $20 donation ? with the exception of girls ? which will go towards the Derek Bell Memorial Education Fund. Spectators in attendance can also make a donation while commemorative Derek Bell Memorial T-Shirts will be on sale.

The late Bell (38) passed away in September, 2002, in a freak boat accident on the wharf at Rocky Bay in St.George?s.

He is survived by daughter Cheyra, two sons Tahj and Detre and wife Kim.

The late sportsman was also an avid golfer and cricketer, having represented North Village?s cricket team in the Commercial Division.

?I would like to invite the public out and support this very worthy cause. It?s going to be a great day of soccer,? said North Village president Shervin Dill.
