Stevie Dickinson and crew Heath Foggo notched a first and a third to come out on top of the standings on the opening day of East End Mini Yacht Club's comet

Gusty winds forced postponement of the flag pole to flag pole race, but five boats still competed in two out of three races scheduled for the Mabel Welch Memorial Trophy.

Dickinson in Kitty Hawk won the first ahead of Byron McCallan and Bryan Steede in Shogun with Colin Clark and Scott Fox third in Five Star Five .

But it was an event full of drama as Howard Lee and Alvin Woods in High Yella broke a spar on the reaching mark while lying second and were unable to finish. And David Wall in Tango turned over on the last flow and also failed to finish.

Just three boats started the second race with David Wall pipping Howard Lee for first place.

Dickinson turned over on the flow while in second place and after three attempts managed to upright his boat and finish third. He thus became eligible for the annual Submarine Trophy.
