Somerset stay on course for sweep
Two goals by teenager Kwame Tucker and another from winger Jerry Webb gave Somerset their third win over St. George's in four meetings this season as the west enders kept on course for another cup final last night.
The result keeps the Trojans on course for an unprecedented sweep of local honours but they had a scare in this Friendship Trophy quarter-final at Somerset after going behind on the half hour only to hit back with two goals in three minutes to shake their pumped up opponents.
The two teams played contrasting styles in the early stages of the first half as the Trojans relied on fluent, short passes and St. George's on long balls into the Somerset half to put their opponents' defence under pressure.
Somerset had the best of the early chances and in the 11th minute went close when a long ball forward by keeper Winslow Williams saw Rodney Bascome control the ball and with a flick set up Jerry Webb whose shot was brilliantly saved at the near post by keeper Troy Hall.
St. George's, with top scorer Clay Smith on the bench resting a shoulder injury, often looked threatening on the break and in the 15th minute their best move saw fullback Andre Todd feed Greg Foggo down the left and his cross to the far post took a deflection before going out for a corner after hitting the far corner flag.
Somerset's last chance before St. George's broke the deadlock was in the 19th minute when Bascome put a shot from inside the box against the far upright after some good approach work.
The opening goal came as a result of a poor goal kick by Williams which enabled St. George's to force a corner on the left. Delbert Minors' inswinging corner was met inside the six yard box and at the far post by Sinclair M.
Smith who steered his header home.
St. George's didn't have much time to think about an upset as the lead lasted just five minutes.
In fact, within eight minutes the Trojans were in front, never to look back as Tucker scored his first goals since netting in the 4-2 league loss to St.
George's on January 3.
The equaliser came when he collected a cross to the far post after a move down the left side and kept his composure to score past Hall. Three minutes later the youngster shot the Trojans in front when Hall punched the ball out from a cross on the right and Reggie Tucker drove the ball back in low and hard with Tucker steering it past the keeper.
Tucker, the midfielder, sent in a similiar shot in the 41st minute but this time the far post denied him a goal after Hall was beaten.
Somerset kept on attacking in the second half and only a brilliant save from Hall denied Kelly Simmons a goal from a long range shot in the 49th minute.
Hall, running back, palmed the ball against the crossbar but Bascome pounced and opted to try to get the ball under control when with just the keeper to beat and ended up touching it straight at a relieved Hall who was still regrouping.
Bascome made amends, somewhat, for that miss by setting up Webb with a defence-splitting pass in the 53rd minute and Webb lobbed the ball over the advancing Hall and into the roof of the net from near the edge of the area.
Somerset were pulling the strings now as St. George's were knocked off their stride, and only some good saves by Hall kept them from winning by an even larger margin. Reggie Tucker followed up a Hall save to smash a left foot shot inches over the bar, before Webb curled a shot from 20 yards past the near post.
St. George's brought on Clifton Simmons for Del Tyrell in the 68th minute and then introduced Clay Smith in the 74th in their last attempt to save this match.
Smith nearly pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when he raced past Larry Simmons on the left and cut inside before trying to squeeze the ball past Williams at the near post and seeing his effort hit the base of the near post.
