Castle changes mind, quits as Zebras coach
all, The Royal Gazette can now reveal.
Money is believed to be the chief reason for the beleaguered coach's departure following weeks of posturing between Castle and members of the executive.
After a recent meeting the former Bermuda national team player had strongly suggested that he would be returning for a second term, but now has had a change of heart.
Castle declined to go into detail but did confirm to The Royal Gazette last night that he would not be coaching the team again this year.
"A few days ago I decided that I was not going to do it,'' said Castle, who took over from Alfred Eve.
"I need to be satisfied and I'm not satisfied with things that are happening (at the club).
Castle made approximately $1,300 last year as head coach, which was a raise of about $250 from the previous year when he was assistant to Eve. It is believed that he was seeking a deal worth close to double that amount for the upcoming campaign.
"I don't want to get into all of that,'' answered Castle when confronted with these figures. "I don't want to cause any more trouble within the club.'' The "trouble'' may well surround club president Leroy (Nibs) Lewis, who is known to wield a "heavy sword'', taking an active role in most -- if not all -- club decisions, including those involving the team which he once coached with much success.
Castle is known to have been increasingly frustrated by not having total control of the team, with Lewis' influence still felt.
Examples of this came during the recent transfer period when prominent players Kenny Thompson and Karl Roberts attempted to join PHC. Castle is known to have expressed a desire to have the pair, but his opinion didn't seem to matter as Lewis and members of the executive rejected both applications.
As far as coaching at another club Castle said: "Anything's possible. Right now I haven't got any plans.
"I'll just take it easy and maybe play a little bit (in the Alliance League) for PHC ... it's still my club.'' Earlier reports had Castle linked to similar positions at Wolves and Dandy Town, but a source at Town, where Mark Trott finished the 1992-92 season as interim coach, stated that Castle was never considered for the post.
Eve, meanwhile, is rumoured to be the current front-runner in the search for a replacement at the Warwick club. However, he dismissed these notions, insisting he knew nothing of the current predicament and that he had not been contacted by the club about providing his services again.
Following triumphs in the Charity Cup, FA Cup and League the previous year, the Zebras suffered through a lean season under Castle, in the absence of top scorers Kyle Lightbourne and Sammy Swan.
