December 18, 2012Dear Sir,This election reminded me as a boy in the living room as the votes came in and saw the PLP win. Truly that was a historic election, but I believe this one in 2012 is one as well with all the various factors that came to play. The election was tense and dramatic and the result leaves a difficult task ahead for governance in Bermuda. However, Paula Cox can now truly be just a cog in the wheel as her days are over.As for Renee Webb's repeated comments that the OBA is a coalition. No, it is not. It is a party made up of all walks of life. So, in that sense yes it's a coalition, but in the sense you meant that it’s just BDA and OBA joined, you are false. And as for her comment Craig Cannonier was elected as OBA leader playing the race card, no again.Congratulations OBA! I wish you all the best. Please help to fix this broken Island, the battle is still uphill for you, but the people of Bermuda have mandated you to be our leaders. Do so with integrity and open minds/hearts. I am so proud Bermudians put aside the racial negative rhetoric and voted on the facts of what is going on in Bermuda. The youth of the Island definitely dealt a blow to old regime politics showing we do not care for this racial nonsense and we are beyond that.Young members on the OBA had a great showing and even in seats the PLP won they lost ground in many of them which sends the message that Bermudians are maturing with voting and are tired of racial politicking and want a government that is open to everyone.Some things I want to see established aside from the obvious reduction in crime and increase in jobs are: Fixed term elections and proportional representation. These are elements of a healthier democratic society and lessens the uncertainty that goes on around election time. The time ahead will be tough as I said, but as Bermuda's motto states Quo Fata Ferunt (Whither the Fates Carry Us) and may God guides to a prosperous fate.ROBERT DAVIES JRDevonshire
