Greenpeace activists heading to Island to protest dumping

A delegation of Greenpeace activists is expected to come to Bermuda later today to protest Government's plan to dump asbestos into the waters off St.

David's.

It is understood that they are also bringing a vessel with them.

Environment Minister Pamela Gordon said she had heard several unconfirmed reports that the organisation was coming to Bermuda.

"I have heard that they are coming with the assistance of the Opposition to embarrass the Government,'' she told The Royal Gazette .

"They are supposed to be here (Monday) because they were told that the House of Assembly is going down and they want to create a bit more embarrassment to the country.'' Ms Gordon said that she had not received any calls from Greenpeace last night but she had received a strongly-worded letter from them on Friday.

In the letter, which was also sent to Works Minister Leonard Gibbons and Shadow Environment Minister Leon (Jimmy) Williams, she said Greenpeace expressed dismay that the Government was still pressing ahead with its dumping plans.

It is believed that Greenpeace plans to use the vessel to follow the barge that will carry the asbestos to the dumping area.

Mr. Williams could not be reached for comment last night.
