Mr. Ian Rix was said to have been beaten up as he tried to calm the troublemakers down.

Police were called out and Saturday's game at Frog Lane was abandoned.

The incident occurred at half-time during the Commercial Division match between Devonshire Colts All-Stars and KPMG.

KPMG captain Mr. Mark Bridges believed one of his team's supporters had become involved in an argument with Colts' fans about music.

"I believe he had wanted them to turn the volume down.'' Mr. Bridges said his team was having a half-time discussion on tactics when trouble flared.

Some 20 people invaded the pitch, and KPMG midfielder Mr. Rix was attacked as he tried to keep the peace.

"He put himself in between the fans, if you can call them that, and the supporter from our side they were really after,'' said Mr. Bridges.

"It all happened so quickly. I think there were only two or three main antagonists.'' Mr. Bridges did not believe Mr. Rix was seriously hurt.

The game was abandoned with the match goalless.
