Child aid come to City Hall

today, which will climax Child Aid's 1992 fundraising campaign to assist children in war-torn Somalia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The "Day of Giving'' ceremony, which commences at 12.30 p.m., will include a live telephone conversation between recording star Stevie Wonder, UNICEF goodwill ambassador Ms Dena Kaye and Child Aid committee member Mr. Glenn Fubler.

The conversations will be broadcast over a PA system at the City Hall. The highlight of the ceremony will be a minute of silence beginning at precisely 1 p.m. The countdown to this moment of reflection will be broadcast over local radio stations.

The UNICEF-affiliated organisation is hoping all residents will participate regardless of where they are at 1 p.m. Motorists are also being asked to turn on their headlights to show their support for these children of war.

Featured speakers will be Education Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons, Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade, a National Liberal Party representative and the Mayor of Hamilton the Wor. Cecil Dismont. Canon James Francis will deliver the opening prayer.

Musical performances by solo vocalist Ms Sondra Chaudhury and a choir comprised of local students and church groups will also be a featured part of the programme.

The choir will be under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Dill, Mr. Leroy Simmons and Mr. Jerome Stovell.

Two of the three local youngsters who represented Bermuda at the UNICEF Children's Fund Special, Miss Zalika Millet and Miss Khalilah Smith, will also be on hand.

The third young performer, clarinet player Mark Lomas, is in school overseas and is unable to attend.

The event, which was yesterday given support by the Amalgamated Bermuda Union of Teachers and the Association of School Principals, is expected to finish by 1.30 p.m.

Mr. Fubler emphasised that the ceremony will not be the end of the fund-raising campaign. Child Aid will continue to accept donations through: their accounts at local banks; all Colonial Insurance offices; and Child Aid boxes located at supermarkets and pharmacies.
