New BIOS director upbeat about organisation’s future

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science (BIOS) is already on the right track, according to the institute’s newly named director.Dr William Curry, the Director of the Ocean and Climate Change Institute and Senior Scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, will take the post on or before September 1, subject to Immigration Department Approval.Speaking yesterday, Dr Curry said he is eager to have the opportunity to join the team at BIOS.“I have always been attracted to that side of the scientific research, helping people get the resources that they require to do what they need to do,” he said.“For maybe the last five years I have been looking into a fair number of possibilities, and Bermuda was one of the types of places I found attractive.”He said that the Island’s location in the heart of the Atlantic provides many unique research and educational opportunities.He explained that the bulk of his own research, which has involved using deep sea sedimentary cores to study environmental changes, but said: “I’m not coming to Bermuda to continue my own research though.“I think it’s a full time job just being the person who represents BIOS and directing BIOS.”Asked about the future of BIOS under his direction, he said his focus will be on ensuring that everything is in place for work at the Institute to continue smoothly.“I don’t think I really want to take BIOS in any new direction,” Dr Curry said. “When the institute broadened it’s scope from the Bermuda Biological Station, from a focus on marine biology to the wider field of ocean science I think it was a good move.“I believe making sure we have the staff that we need to do the work, that’s more important.“I didn’t know many people in Bermuda, but I have found them really welcoming, and I am pleased to be working with them.”
