Community was the focus for the M3 (Middle three) students at Whitney Institute.

The 13-to-14-year-olds recently took part in a variety of events throughout the community.

The students from the three M3 classes were divided-up and went to the Pembroke Rest Home, Twin Variety Store, Harrington Sound and Wee-Learn Nursery Schools, Sunshine League, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and held a car wash.

The students that went to Pembroke Rest Home spent the morning cleaning the home's kitchen and backyard and in the afternoon entertaining the residents by having a sing-a-long.

Zuri Darrell played the piano and was accompanied by Chardala Simons on the violin.

At Twin Variety Store, down the street from the school, students helped Mr.

Adams by stocking the shelves, pricing items, taking out the trash and even painting the store front.

While students at Harrington Sound and Wee-Learn Nursery Schools helped out the teachers by reading to the pre-schoolers, making kites and helping with lunch.

At the Sunshine League a few students helped with general office duties.

The Continuing Care Unit at the hospital had an open house the same day and asked for some of the students to come down and help out.

The students put up flyers and directions on how to get to the unit and decorated the area to help make it more lively.

But the students who ran the community car wash maintain that they had the most fun for the day. Five groups of students washed about 25 cars -- and had the soaked cloths to prove it.

In the end, all the students had fun making a contribution to their community, so much so that they are already planning their next community day.
