PLP’s Kim Wilson welcomes OECD anti-bribery move
Shadow Attorney General Kim Wilson has applauded plans to expand an international anti-bribery convention to Bermuda.Governor George Fergusson announced on Thursday that the UK delegate to the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said legislation was being prepared to include Bermuda under their anti-bribery convention. The convention specifically targets the bribery of foreign public officials.Responding to the news, Ms Wilson said she was pleased to hear the convention was being expanded to include the Island.“This convention is a compliment to both PATI and the Good Governance Act passed a few years ago,” Ms Wilson said.“Even though there does exist a common law offence for bribery, and the Convention contains provisions for making it an offence to bribe a foreign public official in an international business transaction which creates effectively an extra territorial offence, the extension of the entire convention further serves to counter bribery and corruption in Bermuda.”Ms Wilson said the move would improve public confidence in the administrative arm of Government, and said she hoped other conventions would be extended to Bermuda.Last year, a British Foreign Office white paper stated that the UK is committed to implementing international standards such as the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention in the Overseas Territories after evidence of corruption and maladministration was discovered in Turks and Caicos.
