A job centre for out-of-work Bermudians is to be formed from the amalgamation of the Department of Labour and Training and the National Training Board.Economy and Trade Minister Kim Wilson said the two bodies would merge “in the near future”, after Cabinet’s recent approval of the restructuring.Senator Wilson said Government was working harder to assist Bermudians struggling during the economic downturn.A ‘One-Stop Career Centre’ will bring “a more modern approach to assessment, training and placement”.“There is a need to educate and help people adapt to the new realities of the Bermuda economy and the employment opportunities that are available,” she said.“Our role is to assist job-seeking individuals to make the transition to the new economic circumstances.”The Minister said the National Training Board Act of 1997 would be amended in the coming months, allowing the board to take responsibility of the department including training and certification, labour relations and job placement.The Board will also supervise the running of the One-Stop Career Centre.Sen Wilson said the restructuring would improve service and deliver “more effective matching of skills, aptitudes and experience of individuals with the jobs available”.Useful website: www.ntb.bm.
