All change at the top, in politics and in the charts

New hit: Donna Summer released her first record in 1974. She is back in the Top 20 this week.

So we're getting a new leader! Where do we go from here? History will prove that for all his criticism, Premier Ewart Brown did a lot of good for Bermuda. In 20 years' time when we look back we will see that he really was Doc Hollywood, a cool, calm and collected smooth talking, articulate, bright and charismatic leader. I wish him well in his retirement and wish him and his wife good health and happiness. But where do we go from here? More on this after the top 20.

Up to #1 is I Like It by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull. Tumbling to #2 is Dynamite by Taio Cruz. Up to #3 is Ride by Ciara featuring Ludacris.

Falling to #4 it's I Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna. This is a really powerful track but the lyrics are most disturbing and have caused much public debate within music industry circles and amongst fans. Basically, the lyrics speak about abuse in relationships and I usually diss dudes that slap up off their women. But people need to understand that Eminem is just telling a story about what happens to some people in relationships. There are dudes who beat their women. Likewise, there are women who beat up on their men. The issue here is that this song highlights physical abuse and mental/emotional abuse in relationships, which is very prevalent today. What I take from this song and these lyrics is that it needs to stop. People need not stress about the lyrics too much. We cannot be in denial about issues that affect us and things that happen in many people's lives. The first step in solving a problem is the acknowledgement that a problem exists. I submit that this track aids in that process.

Improving to #5 it's Hello, Good Morning by Diddy. Up to #6 is Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, a former essential new track and another rising hit. Improving to #7 is Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars.

And now, DJLT's fave of the month. Up to #8 is DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher featuring Pitbull. This is a banging and up tempo dance/club/pop hit. The song is growing in popularity and is loved by many. I've seen and heard people playing it in their cars and singing along to it with their kids. That is a beautiful sight to see – a mommy and her daughter happily driving, singing, smiling, enjoying good music and each other. Such experiences prove that there is hope for mankind. Music can put you in a good mood, soothe the soul, spirit, empower you, uplift you, etc.

Up to # 9 is Deuces, by Chris Brown featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall. Tumbling to #10 is Rockstar 10, another hit by Rihanna. Sliding down to #11 is California Gurls by newly married Katy Perry, featuring Snoop Dogg, one of the hottest global pop tracks! Tumbling to #12 is Find Your Love by Drake, one of the most popular artists these days.

Improving to #13 is last week's essential new track, Only Girl In The World by Rihanna. Up to #14 is Just A Dream by Nelly. Improving to #15 is Bottoms Up by Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj.

Falling to #16 is Palance by JW and Blaze, the soca hit for 2010.

Slipping to #17 is OMG by Usher featuring will.i.am; a very popular and catchy track that has had a good run in the charts.

Now this week's new hits.

In at #18 is this week's essential new tune, To Paris With Love by Donna Summer. Oh is it good to have her back. My boy Tim Hodgson would find it hard to contain himself over hearing Donna Summer's name, if he were still the Editor approving my submissions! We miss you Tim and hope you're well. But Donna Summer had and obviously still has game. She had some monster hits back in the 80's. I'm thinking about and hearing the hit Bad Girls. The lyrics, "Toot Toot, and, Beep Beep" come to mind. Any old fogeys out there reading and remembering with me? Ms Summer still looks hottt, with three T's, and is still workin' the big hair look, which is just fine by me. In any event, check out her new hit single. It bangs and tops dance music charts worldwide.

In at #19 is Can't Be Friends by Trey Songz, this week's essential new track. In at #20 is Holding You Down by Jazmine Sullivan.

Now back to this week's word – Bermuda's Future. By the time this article is published, the new leader of Bermuda will have been announced. The word on the street is that the Deputy Premier has the inside track, but time will tell.

Ultimately the delegates will choose, and although this method has served Bermuda thus far; it could be time to change it. In other countries, the people choose their leader; not a handful of good old boys and girls, who turn out at important meetings if they can or wish to do so. At least that's what I'm told has been happening. Then there's the bit about the internal politicking and strong arming tactics that go on behind the scenes and about which I'm also hearing.

Irrespective of who the next leader is; I submit the following ten items as issues that require urgent attention and action:

1. Reducing Government spending and the national debt.

2. Reducing crime, gang culture, drug trading and antisocial behaviour.

3. Establishing greater accountability and fairness in the awarding of government contracts and greater scrutiny and monitoring of the work; through to completion, to eliminate cost overruns and jobs taking longer – basically better project management.

4. Addressing all of the issues raised in the Auditor General's recent report

5. Education – what a joke the public education system has become – fix it already

6. Workforce Development, improving the work ethic of Bermudians and eliminating the sense of entitlement that has somehow crept into the hearts and minds of far too many

7. Forcing companies to find reasons why they can hire Bermudians rather than finding reasons why they cannot hire Bermudians and

8. Encouraging citizens to embrace a lifestyle that is more sustainable – by growing some vegetables, living better, being healthier, exercising more eating a better diet, etc., which will reduce the cost of healthcare

9. Reducing the cost of healthcare and putting the brakes on healthcare practitioners and insurance companies who are finding creative ways to justify increasing the cost of healthcare.

10. Encouraging citizens to focus on building families, relationships, relationships with God, extended families, neighbourhoods, etc. as it takes a whole village to raise the children.

If the new Cabinet can address these ten issues, they will go down in history as the most effective Cabinet; because it is easy to be effective when there's lots of money rolling in and we have rich country solutions. We no longer have rich country solutions because we are no longer a rich country. Government revenues are down, businesses are shutting down left right and centre, Government is cutting spending and all is not as it was back in the day.

We are now paying the price for years of irresponsible fiscal management in Government and in the private sector. That's right; the private sector isn't all perfect either – one reason why many companies have gone belly up is because of poor management, in particular poor fiscal management. So there are lessons to be learned in the public and the private sectors about effective management. Let's learn those lessons, put them into practice and not make the same mistakes again. Peace … DJLT.
