Bermuda's business

to us to be little but electioneering. Clearly this was a very important meeting for Bermuda and one which the Premier had to attend in the wake of the British Overseas Territories talks in London. It would have been a gross dereliction of her duty had she not gone to Nassau and the PLP would have been the first to complain.

Yet the PLP Shadow Minister for Finance, Eugene Cox, told the House of Assembly that it is not in Bermuda's best interests for the Premier to be "cavorting all over the Caribbean at a conference where she cannot fully participate''. Far from "cavorting all over the Caribbean'' Premier Gordon was working hard for Bermuda only in Nassau. This was not some picture oppportunity junket but a serious meeting which was important to Bermuda's future.

As for cavorting, the PLP which had no basic part to play took a larger delegation to London than Government and would do well to tell the people which of its supporters paid for the junket.

Mr. Cox said the Premier should be at home explaining the significance of Britain's wishes about the international business community to the public. He also said that Bermuda needed to hear Premier Gordon explain the attitude of the British Parliament to the international business community.

There was no time for the Premier to do that between the London talks and the meetings in Nassau. For one thing, Parliament sat immediately on her return.

Now she returns from Nassau to face the Budget speech by the Finance Minister tomorrow. Dr. Grant Gibbons has also been with the Premier in Nassau where he was important to talks largely about business and finance. The Premier and the Minister of Finance have been extraordinarily busy but they have not neglected the international company sector as Mr. Cox implies.

It has been made clear to the public that talks have already been scheduled between Government and the international company sector. That is important and it is being attended to yet Mr. Cox would have the public think that it is being neglected by Premier Gordon.

We have no doubt that both the Premier and Dr. Gibbons will consult with the international company sector, properly rather than in a huge rush, as soon as they possibly can. We also believe that the Premier, who makes a point of working with the people of Bermuda, will keep the public informed of developments in both London and Nassau as soon as she has time to work them through.

We see no neglect here. Indeed we see quite the opposite. The Premier is going the extra mile for Bermuda. We point all this out to make it clear that what the PLP is doing is purely electioneering of the worst sort. They hope to disrupt public confidence by suggesting that Premier Gordon is neglecting issues at home in favour of "cavorting all over the Caribbean''. That is simply not true. She is very busy about Bermuda's business.
