Stan leads quartet to US event

Young Bermuda sailor Sam Stan was the Island’s top qualifier for this summer’s IODA North American Championships in California.The Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association (BODA) completed their selection trials last week to determine which local youth sailors would qualify to attend the Championships.Stan won the trials with the lowest score of 33 points followed by Rory Caslin with 47 and Ceci Wollmann with 54. The other qualifiers were Antonio Bailey, Michael Barit, Chase Cooper and Makai Joell.The four qualified sailors who have elected to attend the Championships are Stan, Caslin, Barit and Cooper. They will be accompanied by team officials Somers Cooper, Sue Stan and high performance Coach Zizi Staniul.In the Spring Series for the Gold Fleet, Bailey leads Stan by five points and Joell by 10 points.n In his final regatta for his high school, Bermuda’s Blake Burgess helped Christchurch School win last weekend’s Virginia State Championships.Burgess will graduate from Christchurch later this month and has been accepted to the Maine Maritime Academy, were he plans to study Maritime Transportation and hopes to qualify for the Mariners sailing team.The youngster has also been awarded Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association Sailor of the Year.
