All are invited to this year’s Camparama

Students at a previous year's Camparama event.

An action film will be the highlight of this year’s Camparama event that heralds the end of the season for students in government summer camps.Camparama will be held tomorrow at Shelly Bay Field in Hamilton Parish and will be followed by a Moonlight Movie Series showing of GI Joe Retaliation.“This is third year that we are doing this with the Department of Youth Sport and Recreation,” said movie organiser Eugene Dean of Startime Entertainment. The Camparama portion of the evening will include a talent showcase by students from all the government summer day camps. Suzette Harvey of United Dance Production is organising this portion. The event will be hosted by Patrina (Power Girl) Paynter.Mr Dean said it was not easy to find an appropriate film this year.“What I have noticed on the market is there has been a definate decrease in the number of family movies being produced,” he said. “There has been an increase in action drama thrillers.”But he said GI Joe Retaliation, which is rated PG-13, was a good compromise.“People do really enjoy the action films, especially because it is on the big screen with surround sound,” he said. “I am sure everyone will have a good time.“The movie is definately suitable for a broad audience. It has a real super hero feel. It is one of those movies that it is not realistic, but very enjoyable.”The event has been very successful in the last three years with hundreds of people showing up to enjoy the festivities and show their support for Bermuda’s young campers, and then later catch a movie. There will also be a “kiddie land” with lots of slides and rides, and food vendors.“This year the summer day camps have been promoting a green theme,” said Mr Dean. “They have been focusing on educating the children and getting them to be more conscious of how to care for the environment.“So along those lines, we are encouraging people to clean up after themselves. We will be recycling and all the vendors will be using bidegradable and compostable dinnerware, napkins and forks.“We are also offering free water to anyone who brings their own resuable water container.”Parking will be on the field. Entry is free.“This is one of those events that help to bring the community together,” said Mr Dean. “We are all about unity in the community.“I look forward to seeing thousands of people coming out and supporting our young people and enjoying a film.”All are invited.
