August day camps cancelled
because of lack of interest, the Youth and Recreation Minister announced yesterday.
The Hon. Pamela Gordon said not enough children had been registered by last Friday's deadline.
The Senator said the programme would have been financially viable if at least 60 children signed up each week at each of the three centres -- West End Primary School, West Pembroke Primary School and St. George's Secondary School.
The four-week programme had a total space for 2,400 children or 600 each week.
As of Friday, there were only 117 subscribers in total.
The minister said the programme had been arranged to offer families another alternative to supervision for their children throughout the month of August.
She said parents who did register their children may collect their refunds from the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation by providing their payment receipt.
The camps were scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m-5:30 p.m. at a cost of $35 a week per child.
