Bermuda's bats fall short again
Bermuda 113 Bermuda blew their best chance of a victory in the International Youth Tournament at Nationals yesterday when their batsmen failed against some tight Scotland bowling.
Restricting Scotland to 223 off 45.1 overs, Bermuda were in good position at one stage at 96-3. But when top scorer Coolridge Durham was fourth out on that total, it signalled the last of Bermuda's hopes as the tailend quickly succumbed to the off-spinners of Ross Mitchinson and Gregor Maiden to slump from 107-5 to 113 all out.
Durham, who took on a heavy responsibility after Chris Foggo's departure for nought, got little support from the rest of the Bermuda batsmen in his knock of 52 -- the second half-century of the tournament by a Bermudian.
He hit eight fours in his innings with his 50 coming in 110 minutes off 76 balls. Ricardo Brangman contributed 22 while Azeem Pitcher was the only other batsman in double figures with 11.
Mitchinson claimed five for 30 from 10 overs and Maiden two for 21 off nine.
Opener Neil Caplan took two for 22 in five overs.
Earlier Alan Speirs, batting at number six, was the high man for Scotland with 43 which included four fours and a six. Opener Alan Duncan scored 35 as he shared in a second wicket stand of 52 with Scott Dempsie (31).
Number four and five batsmen Neil Millar and Ayaz Gul contributed 22 and 27 before Bermuda fought back with Scotland slipping from 156-4 to 184-8.
The decision by Bermuda captain Travis Smith to open the bowling with his off-spinners paid dividends as he took the first two wickets in his fourth and 10th overs to finish with two for 42 in an unchanged spell.
Jaja Millett picked up three for 43 from 9.1 overs while Justin Robinson had two for 47 and Coolridge Durham two for 33, both from seven overs.
Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association will use today's rest day to analyse the first three days of competition. They will hold a meeting for all umpires and match referees this evening at the Department of Youth Development, Sport and Recreation at 7.30.
