Bermuda fighters grab medals at Worlds
THE Bermuda Karate Organisation team achieved a high level of performance during tough competition at the World Karate Organisation Championships held in Birmingham, England, last week.
Other countries represented were England, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Germany, South Africa, Brazil, Georgia and Ukraine.
Bermuda's Talia Iris placed third in women's open kata. In WKO rules kumite she took her first round match 7/0 and second by forfeit (8/0), both against England. In the third round she scored 3/2 (England) while in her fourth round she suffered an 0/7 loss to Ireland which left her with the silver medal.
Malachi Darrell also won three rounds against English opponents: 6/0, 3/0 and 1/0. In the fourth round he lost 0/3 loss to an Irish fighter which gave him a silver in WKO kumite.
Scott Kennedy won the bronze in both WKF and WKO fighting rules.
Other junior Bermuda competitors were Dominic Butterfield, Jade Darrell and Kakio Williams.
In the seniors Shaun Dill reached the third round in WKF kumite and second in WKO rules. Sentwali Woolride advanced to the second round in WKO rules.
Team BKO was headed by coach Skipper Ingham, assisted by Gladwin "Roots" Phillips and Charles Butterfield and team manager Kristina Ingham.
Accompanying the team were Mrs. Charles Butterfield, Randy Darrell (father of Malachi) and Vincent Darrell (father of Jade).
