Slow down and stay safe on the roads, says road safety group
The Bermuda Road Safety Council is urging the motoring public to take the utmost care while driving in the wake of the first road fatality of 2021.
A spokeswoman for the council offered condolences to the family of 28-year-old Oronde Wilson Jr who died on January 4 after a crash in Southampton.
The spokeswoman said: “January is a time of new beginnings and a fresh start. Many in our community and the world over are looking to reset and start over after a challenging year. In doing so, we should all take time to think and consider how we can be and do better on our roads.
“To that end, the BRSC urges the motoring public to slow down, drive with care and caution, don't drink and drive, and obey all traffic laws and signs.
“Road traffic collisions are preventable and as such we must do our part to prevent them from happening.”
The council’s slogan this month is New Year Use Your Safety Gear and there will be enhancements to the work it carries out in the year ahead.
The spokeswoman added: “Now is the time of year for resolutions and adopting good habits.
“Walking, running and cycling are always big hits in the New Year. While the BRSC encourages this, we want to remind the public that while doing these activities remember to ’stay bright’ and to wear reflective gear to be seen.
“In addition to having the right gear, please ensure that bikes are tuned and in good condition and that you are wearing the correct protective headgear.”
