Fisher going for title hat-trick
her Bermuda teammates as her debut in the prestigious Federation Cup nears.
Fisher is set to become the youngest tennis player to represent the Island when she takes to the court in Antigua in two weeks time. The 14-year-old will join Zarah DeSilva, Tara Lambert and Shonette Wilson in the Caribbean.
However, her focus at the moment is on the Port Royal Open where the youngster has made three finals -- all of which will be played today.
Fisher takes on Sheila Gomez in the Ladies A singles, before partnering Wilson in the doubles and finally Ricky Mallory in the mixed doubles.
"Her match to get to the singles final was a little difficult. She actually beat me but it was a three-setter to get to the final,'' said Wilson. "In the ladies doubles we beat the number two seeds so I guess you must call that an upset which was absolutely wonderful.'' Wilson, who is in her 30s, said the age difference was an irrelevance when it came to the pair partnering each other.
"She (Fisher) has actually got a lot of tennis knowledge in her head, not just coming from her arm and with the raquet,'' she said. "As a team a lot of the plays and strategies come from her. It is amazing what she has learned along the way. She is a real thinker on the court.'' Wilson said despite her prowess Fisher faced a testing day.
"The mixed doubles is going to be tough because they have to play against Steve Bean and Laverne Stowe. You can almost look at Steve and Ricky in doubles equally and Laverne is a darn good mixed player, so I cannot say how that is going to go,'' Wilson said.
In the singles Fisher faces Gomez who saw off Jo Finnigan.
As to her own chance of glory with the youngster Wilson said: "In the ladies doubles we are definitely playing the number one in Wendy Gelhay and Deborah Cheng. I'm not sure how that's going to go but she (Sasha) is going to have a tough three matches, I just hope she can get through at least in a couple of them.''
