Missing jug from Swizzle Inn sign returns after 11 years
A golden jug stolen from the Swizzle Inn sign in Bailey’s Bay eleven years ago has finally returned home. The hand-carved jug had sat within the moongate hole in the sign for nearly 20 years before it disappeared one night in April of 2000.Staff at the popular East End drinking hole had assumed their prized possession was lost forever until last month when a Massachusetts man contacted the restaurant to offer its return. The man, goaded perhaps by a guilty conscience, said the jug had surfaced at a reunion held recently by the friends who had travelled with him to Bermuda 11 years ago.Nobody was more surprised by this development than Swizzle president Jay Correia, who was working at the bar the night the jug disappeared.“It was a very busy night and the place was swamped. There was a group of English kids there, a rugby team, and I kicked them out because a lot of them were underage. I always figured they must have got ticked off and stole it.”The theft was reported by The Royal Gazette a few days later, along with the restaurant’s offer of $100 and a pitcher of swizzle for the jug’s return. The American man who returned it did not claim either.“The jug is now back home where it belongs and we are deciding whether to put it back in the sign or mount it elsewhere and continue to allow people to have their picture taken where the jug used to sit,” said Mr Correia.“I never thought we would ever see it again, but it goes to show you never know!”
