Pitman and Scott will remain in the Senate
Chamber when Premier the Hon. David Saul finalises his Senate appointments, The Royal Gazette has learned. But it is expected Sen. Pitman will step down as United Bermuda Party chairman. Sources said Dr. Saul wanted Sen. Pitman to hold one post or the other, but not both. Meanwhile, the Premier has chosen someone to fill the Senate vacancy left by the resignation of the Hon. Gerald Simons. But he is keeping the name a closely-guarded secret. Businessman Mr.
Raymond Davis is among those whose names have been discussed, sources said.
Mr. David Lines, who ran for the UBP in Pembroke East Central in 1993, had earlier been mentioned as a possible Government Senator. But yesterday, sources said Mr. Lines will instead be named to another post. Dr. Saul would not comment yesterday on who would be named to the Senate. But he said he expected to make an announcement in the next week. Sen. Pitman, who former Premier Sir John Swan named to the Senate in May of 1994, became UBP chairman in December of 1993. Like Community and Cultural Affairs Minister and fellow Senator the Hon. Yvette Swan, he has been mentioned as a possible successor to the Hon. Sir John Sharpe as a UBP candidate in Warwick West. Mr. Scott, a lawyer who was named to the Senate in 1993, was recently elected caucus chairman. Because the chairman must be a member of either the House of Assembly or Senate, it was believed that election sealed his place in the Upper Chamber. Mr. Davis, also known as Mr. Khalid Abdul Wasi, is a member of the Human Rights Commission and the Bermuda Technical Institute Association.
He owns a string of laundromats.
