Boost for Island's drug free sports initiative

Bermuda's drive towards implementing a comprehensive drug free policy to cover all sports in the island has received a boost with the arrival of Canadian Thomas May to help with drug free sport initiatives.

Austin Woods, chairman of the Bermuda Council for Drug Free Sport in the Island, yesterday announced that May had arrived in the Island and would be here to conduct his internship for a six month period.

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in sport secured two internships from the Canadian Government to be placed overseas to assist countries with drug free sport initiatives similar to their own, which have run for nine years.

May, who is 24, is from St. John, New Brunswick. His major role will be to assist the BCDS in formulating clear rules and guidelines for the final phase of its drug-free initiatives which will see year-round random drug testing for all Bermuda's athletes set to commence on January 1, 1999.

May will be located at the office of Benedic Associates.
