Sluggo's catch still the talk of the World Cup
Bermuda might not be playing in this year’s Cricket World Cup, but it appears the country, and Dwayne Leverock in particular, will be forever linked with the event.Just look at this report that appeared in Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper recently:Four years later, they’re still fixing the man-sized divot at second slip. The hero of the 2007 World Cup wasn’t Adam Gilchrist, who scored 149 to help Australia waltz to victory in the final. The enduring image of that tournament for many cricket fans was Bermudian man-mountain Dwayne Leverock, who pulled off one of the most stunning catches in World Cup history to shock India in the second over of their pool match. After qualifying for the event by virtue of a win over the USA in the 2005 ICC Trophy, Bermuda - the tiniest of cricketing minnows - was drawn to face the sub-continental juggernaut at the group stage. It should have been a cakewalk. But what the Indians didn’t count on was the athletic prowess of the bloke tipping the scales at (conservatively) more than 120kg in the slip cordon.Consider the coordination, power and timing involved in hauling that mass off one leg, sticking a big paw out and raking in Robin Uthappa’s thick edge, and it’s probably better than anything Ricky Ponting or Jonty Rhodes ever conjured in their heyday. The celebrations don’t come much better either, have a look below at the footage from that moment and see what we mean.Just try not to spoil the moment by looking at the scorecard 48 overs later.Leverock, a slow left-arm bowler, finished the innings with figures of 1-96 off his 10 overs, while India went on to make 413 runs and win by 257.
