People allowed back to Cabinet as suspicious package declared safe
People were this afternoon being allowed back into the Cabinet office after a Government analyst said there was nothing harmful inside a suspicious package found in the grounds.Police this morning evacuated the building and grounds after the package was found and the Cabinet meeting was interrupted and the Premier and Ministers asked to leave.Fire and rescue crews were called to the scene and at about 11.30am today the package was moved onto the back of a fire truck.Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: "A few minutes before 11am police responded to a report of a suspicious package in the grounds of the Cabinet office."The fire service was called and the building was evacuated and the package was removed."He confirmed it was not an Emergency Ordinance Disposal Unit matter, which meant the package did not contain a bomb."It was a flat package envelope which means it wasn't an explosive device which is one of the things I want to pull off the ledge."A Government analyst was called to the scene and at about 1.30pm said there was nothing harmful inside the package. It is not yet known what the substance was.Lieutenant Wenda Roberts, of the Bermuda Fire Service, said: "We responded with two vehicles, three support vehicles and nine personnel."Two fire fighters with breathing apparatus entered the building to containerise the envelope and just prepare it for the Government analyst, who is here now. "She explained that containerising meant sealing the package in an air tight container to prevent contamination. She didn't have the official records at hand, but said: "We do not get these very often."
