Smith injury opens door for Wright
to comfortably win the SunLife 10-K yesterday.
Smith was forced to miss the race due to a twisted ankle sustained while training the previous day and watched the race on crutches.
Meanwhile, Wright controlled the action from the start as it quickly turned into a three-man race between Wright, Kevin Tucker and Brett Forgesson. But in the end Wright proved to strong, finishing 40 seconds ahead in a time of 33:13.
Tucker was second as he outkicked Forgesson in a fierce battle for second, beating him by just four seconds.
Among the women, Anna Eatherley continued to excel in the absence of Maria Conroy-Haydon and Karen Adams with another emphatic victory.
Eatherley smoked the field, completing the course in 33:40 and beating her nearest female rival Melanie Claude by over six minutes.
The injury to Smith could have a decided effect on the annual Marathon Derby event as he looked the odds-on favourite up until this latest mishap, which occured when Smith stepped on a rock and rolled his ankle.
He was taken for X-rays, which proved negative and is hopeful of being ready to resume work-outs soon.
"Hopefully it's nothing too prolonging,'' said a still upbeat Smith while resting at home last night. "With decent work and attention I should be ready to start training in a week.'' The injury brings back painful memories for Smith who has been plagued by them the past few years, which have forced him to miss the premier event on Bermuda's racing calendar on several occassions.
Said Smith: "When I got it (injury) I immediately thought that my bad luck had struck again.
"It seems that every time May 24th rolls around something happens.'' Smith said that he will visit physio Glenn Robinson today in an attempt to speed up the healing process.
"Glenn has been great to me. He helps me keep a positive attitude, which can have a positive effect on an injury.''
