Runners bid for CAC repeat

Tracy Wright -- are back to lead Bermuda's bid for more success in this weekend's 15th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Cross-Country Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Last year's team of Donawa, Hart, Wright, Mike Watson and Calvin Steede won Bermuda their first ever medal in the competition when they finished third.

That performance earned them an achievement award at last week's Government Sports Awards.

Injuries have eliminated the likes of Kavin Smith, Terrance Armstrong and Harry Patchett from consideration this year while Watson has only just resumed training after injury.

Coach Gerry Swan, who leaves this morning with the five-man team which also includes Sheldon Thompson and Manuel Lopes, thinks this year it will be a major achievement for Bermuda to get in the top four among the eight countries.

"Mexico, Jamaica and Puerto Rico have been, to a very large extent, the top three countries in these championships,'' said Swan yesterday.

"The other countries, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador, have some quality distance runners so that adds a more challenging dimension from our perspective.

"If we get in the top four it will take a special effort. I expect the competition to be very competitive this year.'' After a day of travelling, the Bermuda team will arrive in San Jose this evening at 7.00 (9.00 Bermuda time).

"That gives us a couple of days to get over the travelling and settle in,'' said Swan. "We will view the course on Thursday as well as have a training session.'' The championships will be held on Sunday morning at the Parque Metropolitano Lar Sabana which is at an altitude of almost 4,000 feet. The 12 kilometre course consists of four 3K laps.
