Men await sentence on drugs charges
Two men arrested during a raid that saw cannabis and ammunition seized from a house in Southampton are awaiting sentence — with one having more than $10,000 cash seized in the meantime as the alleged proceeds of crime.
However, the pair and a third man were cleared yesterday of illegally possessing six rounds of ammunition discovered during the raid, with a prosecutor opting to offer no evidence on that charge.
Justin Guy DeSilva, 22, pleaded guilty on a previous occasion to cultivating cannabis and possessing drug equipment in the form of a metal grinder and Rizla papers after Police uncovered a drug-growing operation at the house in Gibbs Hill Road.
He also admitted to possessing a total of 145.45 grams of cannabis with intent to supply and $10,400 in cash that was found in his bedroom.
Yesterday, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo committed DeSilva to the Supreme Court for sentencing and a proceeds of crime confiscation hearing. Meanwhile the $10,400 was forfeited to the court and he was remanded into custody.
Christopher Lee Carreiro, 26, who lived at the same home, pleaded guilty on a previous occasion to possessing drug equipment in the form of a grinder, Rizla papers and scissors. He also admitted to possessing 6.88 grams of cannabis.
Mr. Tokunbo ordered a pre-sentence report yesterday and ordered Carreiro to return to Magistrates' Court on September 22 when he will learn his fate. According to a summary of evidence presented to the court by Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke, Police raided the house at 5.22 p.m. on April 18.
Officers found marijuana and seeds in Carreiro's room, along with a grinder and Rizla papers.
More drugs were found in the kitchen, along with germinating cannabis seeds. DeSilva admitted they were his.
A bag, which DeSilva admitted to owning, contained a digital scale which he said was used for weighing marijuana.
DeSilva further admitted that a home-made cigarette, rolling papers and small grinders found in the kitchen were his. In his bedroom, officers found more cannabis and the lump sum of cash.
"Police seized two notebooks from inside his bedroom. Amongst the paperwork seized was a list of names with monetary values next to them," explained Ms Clarke.
The pair was arrested and interviewed by the Police. Carreiro, who works at the Coral Beach Club, admitted the cannabis in his room belonged to him, but denied peddling drugs.
DeSilva admitted the drugs in his bedroom and the kitchen were his.
He stated that the money seized was his personal savings, gained as a result of him being a commercial fisherman, although he is not currently working.
The defendants were charged along with a third man, Tomas David Viera, 22, of the same address, with illegally possessing six rounds of semi-automatic bullets discovered during the Police raid.
Ms Clarke offered no evidence on that matter yesterday, although she did not say why, and all three were discharged.
