...While school’s fair proves to be a success

All the fun of the fair: members of the community enjoyed what was on offer in the refreshment tent at the recent fair organised by T N Tatem Middle School

On Saturday, November 19th, the first annual TN Tatem Middle School Fair was held at TN Tatem’s school field. The fair was a great success. The weather was a bit cool, but the sun was still out, and it certainly did not stop people from coming.Music was played from the speakers that brought life to the fair.Activities such as playing games to win prizes, fun castles, and soccer were held. There were performances from various dance groups, and a student sang at the fair which was very impressive. Many students, former TN Tatem students and people from the community helped out at the fair and contributed in many other ways to make the fair the great success that it was. There were many snacks and other treats at the fair: cotton candy, lovely popcorn fresh from the popper, and French fries cooked by TN Tatem teachers. There was a white-elephant sale, and stalls were set up where vendors sold baked goods, books, clothes, artefacts, and things that were donated from parents and businesses in the community. The seniors enjoyed their afternoon under the elegantly decorated tent that was set up especially for them. They were served tea, cookies, banana bread, gingerbread, as well as tuna, egg, ham, and turkey sandwiches. Most of all, they seemed to enjoy being served by students past and present in formal dress. The bingo game and prizes they received added to their enjoyment.People from other schools and from all over the island attended the fair which was a big surprise for the PTA, the organisers of the fair.We had a lot of children from high schools who came to the fair and expressed that they enjoyed themselves. They were accompanied by lots of adults looking for a fun way to spend their dayEven though there were lots of people at the fair, there were no reports of bad behaviour or trouble at our event which was quite impressive. The young people who attended the fair and those students who attend TN Tatem Middle School also enjoyed their day and did not want to leave the fair when it was scheduled to end. They had most of their fun doing activities mainly on the fun castles. Many of us also contributed to the success of the fair because we helped during school hours and outside of school to develop the fair and ideas for the fair.Other children also enjoyed their time at the fair hanging out with their friends and engaging in the positive activities which brought joy to many adults. By the time the fair ended, they also did not want to leave because it was so fun and enjoyable.Adults could be seen enjoying the fair very much and spent their afternoon chatting and doing activities with each other. They left all of the really fun things to the kids, but they bought many items in the White Elephant Sale, and some also donated money to the PTA which was quite kind and considerate of them. There was also a draw at the fair. Many people had purchased raffle tickets, but fewer won the prizes at the end of the fair. There were coupons to be won, gift certificates, and other prizes. The children were most excited about an iPad that a lucky person won.Our first fair ended with an excellent, lively performance by the Warwick Gombeys. Our PTA is considering hosting fairs annually and hoping to have an equally successful outcome. It was exciting and rewarding to have such a successful fundraiser.I’d like to give a special thanks to the PTA Executive for their vision, determination, and drive to organise the school fair, our TN Tatem staff, parents, students and former students, friends and members of our TN Tatem community, our performers, and all who attended the fair, enjoyed themselves, and helped to make this event a success.
