Mallory lifts Open title

team-mate and second seed Michael Way 7-5, 6-0 in Sunday's men's singles final of the Heineken Open.

Way appeared to lose concentration after breaking strings on two of his racquets in the second set, but Mallory had always held the upper hand.

He led 4-2 in the first set before Way broke service to even the score at 4-4.

But at 6-5, the number one seed broke his opponent again.

Hitting deep top spin backhands, Mallory then took complete control in the second set to run out a comfortable winner.

The men's B final, meanwhile, provided an upset as teenager Jovan Whitter surprised top seed Eugene Simmons in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Two double faults by Simmons in the eighth game proved decisive, allowing Whitter to go ahead 5-3 before he served out the first set.

And it was another double fault by Simmons which saw him go down 5-2 in the second set after he had already lost serve in the third game.

Whitter again served out the set.

In the doubles final, Mallory picked up his second title, teaming up with Steve Bean to beat Way and Stuart Smith 7-6, 6-3.

Jill Finnigan had few problems in the ladies' singles final, sweeping past Gill Butterfield 6-1, 6-2, but there was a closer contest in the ladies' B final where Julie Lunn needed three sets to beat Mary Giordano -- 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.

Finnigan, like Mallory, added a second crown when she partnered Wendy Gelhay to defeat Butterfield and Kelly Holland, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a three hour marathon.
